I’m Cameron M. Johnson, known on YouTube as GambasTV. I was born in England in 1996, but since 2007 I’ve lived in Michigan in the United States. I’m on a gap year right now.
My interests include film, tv, gaming, books, music, history, politics, robotics (visit my team’s website at adambots.com), comedy, the internet, and football. I expect that most of what I write about on here will be related to one of those subjects, and what I like to write most are reviews of films, books, and occasionally tv shows and albums.
You can follow me on twitter @gambastv .
I’m always talking about my opinions on movies, tv shows, games, books, albums, and songs, and so I enjoy comments on your opinions of what I talk about on here. A good argument is always fun, and the internet is the best place for that.
Some of my favorite films are Pulp Fiction, Citizen Kane, Babel, This is the End, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Big Lebowski, Life of Pi and Star Wars. My favorite TV shows are Doctor Who, Top Gear, Pointless, QI and Masterchef, and my favorite music artists are Oasis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Vampire Weekend and Kanye West, though I like a little bit of all genres. My favorite games are Catherine, Heavy Rain, League of Legends, The Elder Scrolls, Uncharted, Skyrim, Ratchet & Clank, Rock Band, and Playstation All-Stars.
About my ratings: everything is rated out of 4 stars (0,.5,etc.). ★ represents a complete star and ½ represents a half one.
★★★★ – A great film. I’d say I give my top rating slightly more than most critics, probably because I’m easy to please but also because I love a lot of movies. 4 stars are still not easy to get, and reserved for the very best films that transcend their genres and affect on every conceivable level. Equivalent to 10/10. Ex. The Big Lebowski, Babel, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, Citizen Kane
★★★½ – An excellent film. Given to films which aren’t quite masterpieces but are exceptionally made and will please most audiences. Push the boundaries but not as much as a 4* film would. Equivalent to 8-9/10. Ex. Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Phillips, Frozen, How to Train Your Dragon 2, August: Osage County
★★★ – A good film. Given to movies that are enjoyable and/or effective, but not to the grandiose levels that better films are. Fulfill their purposes but not as much as they could have, and not without flaw. Will entertain most audiences. Equivalent to 7/10. Ex. Noah, The Great Gatsby, Sharknado, Pain & Gain, Transformers (1)
★★½ – A pretty good film. These movies do more right than wrong, but their flaws will probably be enough to put off those who aren’t a fan of the genre, actors, style, and/or subject material. Equivalent to 6/10. Ex. Olympus Has Fallen, Rise of the Guardians, Rio, The Expendables (1), Shrek Forever After
★★ – A mediocre film. There’s good and bad, so you’d have to be a real fan of this type or film or its cast to want to watch it. Fails to do anything more than what it’s required to do at a basic level. Equivalent to 5/10. Ex: Cars 2, The Book of Eli, Year One, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan
★½ – A poor film. There’s more bad than good, but there’s maybe one or two good scenes and/or performances. Misses the mark on most things. Equivalent to 4/10. Ex: Holiday in Handcuffs, 10,000 B.C., Hercules, The Midas Touch, The Boondock Saints
★ – A bad film. 95% of what’s on display here is bad. These are usually the movies that are not just bad, but boring or unfunny if it’s a comedy, which makes them worse than The Room or The Wickerman, to which I’d give higher ratings because they’re fun to laugh at. Sometimes I might give this rating to films that try too hard to be something they’re not. Equivalent to 3/10. Ex. The Cat in the Hat, The Hot Chick, Eragon, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, As I Lay Dying
½ – An awful movie. This is a rare rating I’d give to film that are blatantly stupid, annoying, offensive, cynical, lazily produced, and/or completely miss the point of what they’re trying to do. Equivalent to 1-2/10. Ex. God’s Not Dead, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Furry Vengeance, Love’s Kitchen, Alpha and Omega
0 – A despicable movie. This incredibly rare rating, equivalent to a 0/10, would only be given to a film so bad it’s not even good enough to be watched as a “how to not make a bad movie” lesson (to borrow from TrilbeeReviews) because the flaws are so blatantly obvious and there is no sign the creators of the film cared for it to have quality. Ex. Hoodwinked 2: Hood vs. Evil, Movie 43
